TM Spotlight – Nerdette

ThumbstickMafia is dedicated to supporting and promoting diverse women in gaming – we’re happy to introduce a spotlight to gamers, content creators, streamers, developers and members of the industry.

Today’s Spotlight is on Gabriella from Nerdette at Large!

In her own words: Hello! I’m Gabriella and I run Nerdette at Large, Nerdette Minute and write the fangirling series for Her Story Arc. I’m a 24 year young nerdette who lives with her two cats, Geronimo and Kahn, and her Chef-In-Training boyfriend. Most of the time you’ll find my nose buried in my 3DSXL, Comic Books or on my laptop. I love being a gamer, and I thoroughly enjoy puzzles, adventure and arcade fighters.

What game would you say made you fall in love with gaming?
Street Fighter and Knights. I had a Sega Saturn, PlayStation and a Sega Dreamcast. I’ve been playing video games since a very young age and it’s always been one of my favorite things to do.

What got you interested in streaming?
I saw some streamers with modded 3DS, and I thought that was so cool. They had so much energy and they were playing games I’ve never heard of so I wanted to get in on the fun.

What games are your currently playing?
Now I own a PS3, PS4, and a 3DSXL. I’m currently playing: Project X Zone 2, Diabolical Box and Professor Layton V.S. Ace Attorney and Tomb Raider for PS4.

Tell us a bit about your blog; Nerdette at Large and your YT channel. What kind of content can folks expect to find there?
Nerdette At Large is a nerdy lifestyle blog. I write about Comic Books, Video Games, anime, television and film. It’s a love letter to your nerdy heartstrings. Nerdette Minute is My Youtube Channel, it’s a video series about my life and nerdy things. You can find Semi-short vlogs and my thoughts on Nerd Topics, such as pokemon ( I did an entire week of videos to celebrate the 20th year anniversary) reviews and just general my general thoughts on movies and television.

You’ve been blogging on Nerdette since 2008! What’s been your favorite article of yours and why?
Honestly, I can’t believe I’ve been writing for so long! It wasn’t until last year, that I started to get serious readers. It feels amazing, to keep working, because just like me, my blog is always evolving. My favorite blog posts are Ranking my Favorite Detectives. Fangirling: Maps Mizoguchi, and Inclusivity is NOT your enemy.

Have you faced any challenges as a black woman navigating nerd spaces and representing the culture?
I haven’t had any serious issue navigating nerd spaces. Just the usual normal racist trolls. I just block them and keep it movin’. I’m much too busy to give them any energy.

How can we support you?
The best way to support any content creator is to share their work. I have a patreon for those that have a little extra to spare, in order to help me create even more.

Anything you’d like to add?
I’m looking to increase the amount of content I can produce. So I’m looking to collaborate with bloggers and vloggers and also looking for any bloggers that would like to guest blog and create nerdy content. If you’re interested please email me:

What are your top 5 anime theme songs?
My 5 favorite anime theme songs are Beautiful Bones, Tanaka-Kun’s Always Listless, Sailor Moon Crystal, Your Lie in April and Black Cat.
