ThumbstickMafia is dedicated to supporting and promoting diverse women in gaming – we’re happy to introduce a spotlight to gamers, content creators, streamers, developers and members of the industry.
Today’s Spotlight is on caster Simply Undrea!
In her own words: Simply Undrea is a full-time variety streamer on Twitch.TV from the Bay Area, California. In addition to gaming and getting involved with charities and causes; she is also passionate about the music industry, honing her craft and expanding her creativity.
You were recently at GDC, tell us a little bit about your experience.
GDC was amazing! My feet absolutely hated me afterward but I had a great time meeting longtime Twitch friends, seeing familiar faces and meeting other professionals in the gaming industry. I got to work as a Brand Ambassador for Survios, a gaming company. They made an active-VR game for the HTC Vive called ‘Raw Data.’
It’s not a stationary playthrough at all. You’re actually standing (along with your co-op partner) in a room and your main task is to fend off waves of android enemies. Weapon choice was dope and you had access to a pistol, katana, pump action shotgun or compound bow.
I actually got to demo the game before things kicked off on the GDC show floor and I LOVED every single second. The game was not only graphically gorgeous but I was surprised at how engaging it was, too. If you dodged an attack or ducked for cover, your avatar did the same thing in game! It was a very immersive experience.
Whenever I had breaks I would wander around, see what other booths were doing or race to meetup with friends. After work, I’d hit up various industry events as well.
I also stayed busy taking pictures to make sure I was keeping my social media accounts updated on what I was seeing and doing! I could easily say it was either for business or pleasure but my time at GDC 2016 was a great mix of both.
How did you get into content creating / broadcasting?
I got into broadcasting for two main reasons, honestly. The first being that my Father had passed away and he was a HUGE influence as to the reason why I ever got into gaming. So at the time, I was battling depression and needed an outlet.
Someone had mentioned Twitch to me so I kinda tested the waters and lurked for a while. I had no intentions of ever streaming, initially. But eventually I took the plunge into it full-time because gaming has always a staple, a constant in my life and I love it. Twitch definitely nurtures and allows my passion for gaming to flourish.
What’s the most fun and most difficult game for you to stream?
I’m laughing already because the most fun game I’ve streamed so far and the most difficult are two different things. Allow me to explain. (Those of you who were present for my God of War III: Remastered stream already know where I’m going with this! Lol.)
Drizz – chat Mod and a good friend of mine – gifted me the game and I was just plowing my way through the title. (Because I love action and gore, and GoW has plenty of it!) I was chugging along quite nicely, game-play wise until … until friggen Zeus.
It took me hours to beat that boss. Chat and I were joking about how many years it would take. But when I finally did it felt GREAT – super rewarding, we all celebrated – but it also spawned a long running joke.
Whenever I’m stuck on a boss I always joke, ‘at least it’s not Zeus!’ Haha.
And Until Dawn was definitely a fun stream! When I first began the game, I hadn’t planned on making it through in one sitting but I couldn’t resist. I was glued to my seat and had to see what happened next.
That broadcast was great because it encouraged a lot of participation from my audience. All the decision that weren’t timed, I left up to the chat to vote on. So they chose dialogue options, what path to take if there was a split in the road, the whole nine.
It was really interesting seeing the outcome of those choices play out, too!
What games do you currently have in rotation?
Right now I’m making my way through Gravity Rush: Remastered, HITMAN, Warframe, Kholat, Minecraft: Story Mode and Alien: Isolation. (Occasionally I’ll do one-off games that I can finish in one sitting like Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture or Gone Home.)
What’s your stream schedule like?
I stream every weekend (Friday – Sunday) started at 9AM PST, 11AM CST & 12PM EST. Stream times vary. Sometimes I’ll do a short cast for 2 hours or so and other times I can sit for a 7+ hour stream. It depends on my mood and how chat is flowing.
What other projects are you working on?
I don’t have too many irons in the fire as far as projects go (because I want to focus on a few,) but my fundraising for Extra Life remains consistent.
I’m currently working on linking up with Take This a non-profit dedicated towards mental health advocacy. It’s something I’ve always felt strongly about and since I suffer from depression, I think this organization is doing great things.
Something that is also in the works is a potential collaboration with AnyKey, a new initiative geared fair and inclusive spaces for women in gaming.
Once things are more solidified I’ll be able to give more details!
What is your fondest game memory?
One of my fondest game memories is sitting on the living room floor with my kitten at the time (Mickie) watching my Dad play Madden on our Sega Genesis.
Interests outside of gaming?
Music, anime and cooking are definitely up there on my list of things when I’m not streaming! Gaming will always be my first love but music is a close second. Anime is totally something I can lose myself in. I love cooking because it brings people together over a great meal.
New favorite musical artist / band?
Have to support my fellow artists! I was just put on to Sammus Music and I’m in love. (Aaand totally not a new artist but Rihanna’s ‘ANTI’ stays in heavy rotation, too.)
Game you’re most looking forward to in 2016?
Uncharted 4 and The Last Guardian. I played Uncharted 1 – 3 back to back every weekend until I beat them all on my stream so I’m super hype to play the new installment of the franchise for the first time this year.
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are games which are super close to my heart – closer to my heart than FF7, – so it’d be everything to be able to stream The Last Guardian! I actually cried when it was announced, that’s how much I love it.
Anything you’d like to add?
Thanks so much for featuring me! I really appreciate this opportunity. 🙂
